and the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all
Wynne was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, always given anything she wanted. Even from a young age, though, she displayed the characteristics of being an introvert. Wynne was shy and soft-spoken, always thinking before giving a response to a question. But she was happy just spending time with her parents and holding conversations with them as opposed to those her own age. If it hadn't been for Otto she might not have had anyone to consider a close friend at all. She was lucky enough to be given a younger sister a couple of years younger than herself, and though she was still young, she adored little Vivien.
The two girls couldn't have been more different in terms of personality. Vivien was lively and energetic, and Wynne was always trying to stay in line and follow the rules, never wanting to draw attention to herself. Her sister was who helped her to see just how exciting life could really be. They would go off on grand adventures, often ending the day with eating as much chocolate as the two little girls could stuff themselves with. For Wynne, having Vivien around was more than just having a little sister to play with - she finally had a best friend who would stand by her no matter what, and though she had Otto to count on there was just something about a sisterly bond that felt different.
As they grew older though, they also began to drift. Wynne became more concerned with her schoolwork rather than playing, although she would try to divulge the younger of the Winters children by agreeing to go if she wasn't too busy with her homework. It was the fall of her 19th year that her entire world fell to shambles. She'd been at home at the time, cleaning up her bedroom here and there and rearranging some things when the phone rang. Robert and Laura Winters had been involved in a car accident, the other driver being drunk, which proved to be fatal to the two parents, leaving their girls as orphans. Her stomach had turned to lead and she'd dropped to the floor right then, an icy and eerie cold consuming her until she could think just long enough to numbly dial the phone to call Vivien.
Being that she was nineteen at the time of their death, Wynne was granted custody of her sister. It was out of no desire to be in control, but rather to keep the two of them together in their home. All of the responsibilities of being an adult landed squarely upon her shoulders and overwhelmed her to the point of madness. She withdrew into herself, talking to barely anyone outside of Vivien and Otto because as far as she was concerned, their support was all she needed to get through it. Despite having an inheritance from their parents, Wynne still busied herself with a job and earning a continuous income. She didn't want to take anything for granted again, especially not after losing her parents. It filled her with the need to be self-sufficient and responsible. Wynne still lives in their family home with her sister, and though she can often come off as being slightly stand-offish and even cold, it's only because she cares too much about everyone else that she feels the need to keep her guard up.
It was in Arendelle when the tale of the two sisters began. They were the best of friends, always playing and running about the castle they referred to as 'home'. Elsa was the older of the two and born with unique ice powers that only grew stronger with age. It was of little concern to the little princess and future queen, for all she cared about was spending time with Anna. They would often sneak out of their rooms and Elsa would entertain her younger sibling with her magic, or would otherwise build snowmen together while giggling the entire time. But Elsa's carefree nature would not last after she accidentally hit Anna with the ice while trying to prevent her from falling and getting injured, only to be the one to harm her instead. The worry was instant as she scooped up her sister in her arms and cried out for her parents. The King and Queen were worried for both of their daughters, and it was with the guidance of the trolls that they made the ultimate decision: to remove all memories of magic from little Anna's mind and to help Elsa learn to control her powers before something worse happened.
Their parents separated them, giving them their own bedrooms and leaving Elsa alone with her thoughts. While Anna could still run around and play, albeit by herself, Elsa was trapped in her room as an eternal prisoner until she could control it. Control never came though. Her father gifted her with a pair of gloves, ensuring her that if she could conceal it she would be able to keep it under the radar. Her powers only grew in strength and became more unpredictable. Elsa got to the point that she refused to even touch her parents in fear of harming them. The fear outweighed anything else in her life, and as a result she continued to lock herself up in her chambers. She longed to be able to leave and finally have her parents open the gates again. But being a prisoner meant being a recluse, and that meant little to no contact with the outside world, including Anna.
Tragedy struck a few years before she would come of age when her parents were killed while traveling on a ship. Being incapable of attending the funeral and being there for Anna, and having the support while grieving for herself, she locked herself away. Her entire room was iced over, and she felt as if all of the life had been sucked out of her right then and there. Now she would become Queen as soon as she became old enough to take the throne and the prospect of facing everyone was sobering. She spent the next few years focusing on learning how to control her emotions and keep the ice at bay.
The day arrived sooner than she might have imagined and her anxiety was high even despite the mantra she kept reciting to herself. Elsa practiced and practiced, but nothing could adequately prepare her for the actual experience. All eyes of the kingdom were on her, having not seen her since she was a child, and it was all she could do just to slip her gloves off long enough to accept the title of Queen Elsa of Arendelle. At the party, she felt a little bit of her old self slipping through the cracks of her carefully practiced facade while she joked with Anna. But soon all patience was gone when she requested permission to be married - how could she possibly think Elsa would give her her blessing to marry a man she didn't even truly know?
Elsa's refusal resulted in an argument, one to which she repeatedly warned Anna to stop as politely as she could while cradling her now gloveless hand. All of those years of avoiding human contact finally caught up to her and in a moment of impatience and anger, a barrier of ice formed in her defense. She fled from the castle and her own coronation party, barely turning back when Anna yelled out her name. She escaped to the north mountain and set all of Arendelle into a state of an eternal winter. But it was on the mountain that for the first time in forever, Elsa finally felt free. She could breathe and be who she was. No longer did she have to conceal her powers or keep her emotions at bay. So she built herself an ice palace and finally became the woman she was meant to be - just a little lonelier than the new Queen of Arendelle ought to be.
Anna found her in next to no time, and though she had to admire the younger girl's determination, it was not what Elsa wanted. She wanted her sister to be safe and she was anything but safe while with her. An argument began and in a moment of frustration, Elsa accidentally struck Anna again. Guilt took control and she forcibly made Anna and Kristoff leave by means of a giant snow monster. She struggled with what she'd done, constantly ordering herself to not feel. It wasn't until after Hans pointed out that she couldn't let anyone think she was truly a monster, despite the fact that they were attempting to kill her, that she finally realized the gravity of what she'd done and just how far out of control she'd become.
Hans imprisoned her within her own castle, chaining her to the floor and concealing her hands from view. In a moment of desperation and despair, Elsa froze the entire cell and escaped, hidden by means of her own blizzard. There was no controlling her emotions now, and especially not after Hans caught up to her and told her that Anna had died. Elsa fell apart right then and there and collapsed upon the ice in grief. It was bad enough to lose their parents, but losing Anna was not something she could ever bear. Anna sacrificed herself to save her life just as Hans was about to murder her on the spot, and as her heart finally opened to feeling after being closed off for so many years, she threw herself across her sister's frozen form, but it was the love between the two sisters that finally enabled her to thaw her heart and in turn, save Anna. The key all along was their love for one another.
The eternal winter came to an end and it took Elsa a few days to stop hugging Anna as much as possible. The gates remained open and the kingdom rejoiced, especially when she ordered Hans to be taken away to his brothers and the Duke of Weaselton to be escorted on his ship out of Arendelle. Instead of being feared for her powers, Arendelle accepted her for them.
